Edyta Wijas – graduated with an honours degree from the Department of Photography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań (a diploma in Natalia LL's studio). Previously, she also studied economy at the University of Szczecin. She runs a publishing house and lives in Szczecin.
With a work Jakoś przędę I wanted to place my face in the visage and the aesthetics of mass culture. I was guided by a transposition of such photos as, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baqP_DQOn14 where everything is perfectly impregnated: illumination, colour, sheen. Immaculate faces created with an electronic scalpel disturb, however, by their transparency. They provoke us to enlarge pixels and disclose the illusion. Soon a self-portrait woven out of colourful, lustrous threads, reeled on thousands of spools, came into existence. The spools created thousands of colourful, lustrous points. From afar the view was homogenous, a picture emanated and glittered. A structure of an object was seen at close range. With time, this subtly woven cloth was weakened by spontaneously disentangling threads. It was not intentional, but I allow them to keep disentangling. This extricating thread soothes and relieves. Why spools? A choice was intuitive. Tightly threaded, organised, with entanglement as a part of their nature, they gave a chance for significant exaggerations (pixel/spool, integration/disintegration).
I gave Edyta Wijas a book Fotografia – podwójna gwiazda kultury with an inscription, where I regarded her as one of the best graduates of the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznañ. I will justify that. Edyta is a person internally organised, open to taking up challenges. She is known for her receptive mind. For art, however, the most important feature is a creative attitude, ability to think in categories which look ahead, beneath the routine of everyday life. These are the mind’s properties that Edyta possess.
A reference point for the work Jakoś przędę is, called that way by an author, consciousness of reality. Edyta senses different orders in the world that surrounds her and she does not negate their entanglement. What kind of entanglement is being concerned this time when linked with the concept of art?
A hidden source of the aesthetics of a golden division are the rules of organisation of a sensory field of an eye. A pleasure deriving from an activity of, among others, a sight sense is one the basis of elementary aesthetic impression.
What derives from the organisation of the sensory field of an eye is e.g. a feeling of pleasure when an object observed is in the certain place of the visual area. Those places reflect perfectly the rules of the golden division, discovered, but not made up, in the ancient times. Today we have to deal with one of the youngest disciplines – neuroaesthetics. Contrasting background, discriminatory roles of colours and other rules of aesthetics also base on psychophysiology.
The essence of a photographical image are the a priori given factors. It is of a less importance whether they come from the nature or a computer. This joins analogue photography with widely realised digital photography and is related also to the pictures made with the use of untypical carrier, in a manual way. In the work Jakoś przędę an image is created on the basis of a photo, from the threads reeled on spools, it is a good example of thinking in the modern art cathegories. Jakoś przędę is a keystone of the mass culture art. It can also be an efficient advertisement. It is worth mentioning that the concept of a thread corresponds to the linearity of writing, with scanning, imperceptible from afar structure of a TV picture.
To sum up, Edyta Wijas' works are characterised by their fantastic feeling and intuitive use of current achievements on the field of theory of communication and art. At the same time she uses the primeval rules of picture aesthetics, still present in the mass culture.
